ABSTRACT

Interfirm Knowledge Sharing and Intrafirm Knowledge Maintenance for Supply Chain Abstract Research efforts to investigate the knowledge management processes that link inter- and intrafirm operations of knowledge resources are scarce. We attempt to contribute to supply chain management literature and practices by proposing and empirically testing a conceptual framework that integrates buyer-supplier knowledge sharing and intrafirm knowledge maintenance in the supply chain context. We first conceptualize the two modes of interfirm knowledge sharing (i.e., routinized and nonroutinized knowledge sharing) and the two types of intrafirm knowledge maintenance (i.e., knowledge utilization and updating). We then provide hypotheses on how firm-specific culture drives the supplying firm’s knowledge sharing, and subsequently the buying firm’s knowledge maintenance. We test our framework using data collected from a leading multinational trading group headquartered in Hong Kong, which comprises more than 1,000 independent strategic business units (SBUs).
