ABSTRACT

Given the greater complexity and dynamism of markets, companies are finding it increasingly difficult to manage new product development processes on their own. Innovation ecosystems, which have recently evolved significantly at both the practical and theoretical levels, have emerged as an instrument to support these processes. In this context, innovation ecosystems have been associated with benefits both at the business level (innovation and new product development results) and at the collective level for society (sustainability). However, few quantitative studies demonstrate these benefits. The main objective of this paper is to examine how the participation of firms in innovation ecosystems contributes to create value not only for the firm, but also for its environment. To that end, we have designed an empirical study with quantitative data involving surveys among 287 R&D managers. This study allows us to expand existing literature on innovation ecosystems, demonstrating their influence on the creation of economic, social and environmental value.
