ABSTRACT

The onset of digitalization in contemporary times has prompted fundamental structural shifts in global business activities. A global public crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic turbocharged those trends and proclivities. Although research has examined digitalization and its implications, the enablers, inhibitors, and outcomes of digitalization amid global public crises are overlooked. Our paper offers a systematic review of 155 academic studies on digitalization published across disciplines amid the global pandemic from 2020 to 2022. We synthesize how digitalization is accelerated by various factors across individual, organizational, industrial, and national/international levels and how it adds value for different stakeholders. Considering numerous ongoing public crises and disputes worldwide, we map out implications and future research directions illuminating the essential roles of digital transformation for the very survival of businesses in current and future global public crises.
