ABSTRACT

The video game industry is a key sector of the global entertainment market with enormous economic impact and a diverse consumer audience. Simultaneously, video games have attracted considerable academic interest in recent years, reflected by a rising number of publications. Despite the popularity of video games, the literature is highly fragmented and lacks consolidation. Thus, this study aims to integrate interdisciplinary research on the business and economics of video games. Using a systematic literature review, 104 articles published in 30 journals were identified. The articles are categorized along eight main research themes: (1) platform economics, (2) business models for video games, (3) communication strategies, (4) branding, (5) distribution, (6) piracy, (7) consumer motivations to play video games, and (8) consumer engagement. This study contributes to the theoretical advancement of research on video games and highlights both extensively studied and under-researched topics.
