ABSTRACT

In 2020, thousands of Ukrainians were fleeing from their country which resulted in a refugee crisis in many countries, including Hungary. Hungarian volunteers tried to help those in need: they faced many challenges on the way and learned a lot from it. In depth interviews were conducted to explore the needed competences for volunteering with Ukrainian refugees. Nine categories were created based on the skills and competences needed to participate in a volunteer activity. Based on the findings, nonprofit organizations can advertise volunteer opportunities with highlighting the needed competences and what the volunteers can learn from the experience.
