ABSTRACT

Understanding and managing efficiently emotions during the care journey is one of the biggest challenges for healthcare practitioners. This paper specifically focuses on the Fear of Recurrence (FR) as it is a complex and prevalent concern among chronically ill patients that still needs to be addressed. The authors present a fresh approach of FR in the context of cancer focusing on the perceived or acute patient resources’ depletion and lack of control that affect the experience of FR. Through a qualitative approach, based on two studies among patients and practitioners, findings reveal that the multifaceted experience of FCR is related to individual, inter-personal and structural resources. This paper provides practical insights into interventions that could help to protect, enhance and regain control over these resources to effectively manage FCR. This approach holds promise for enhancing the overall quality of life for chronically ill patients.
