ABSTRACT

This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of determinants of household food waste (HFW) while acknowledging differences in the importance of determinants that may arise between developed and developing countries. This is done by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR). The results show that the determinants of HFW are diverse and, according to the socio-ecological model, can be categorized on the individual-, household-, family-, and external levels. Moreover, the study exposes that most studies on HFW determinants indexed in high-impact databases are conducted in developed countries. The scant attention paid to developing countries is a considerable problem, given the widespread issue of household food waste and the need for comprehensive, cross-regional solutions. It is crucial to fill the research gaps to provide a more thorough understanding of the determinants contributing to HFW and find a global solution.
